Dear Dolly

I'm sure that all of you guys and gals out there know that Dolly Parton passed away a couple of days ago at age 80. She was an icon in many directions, for us, of course, it was the flaunting of her long acrylic nails. I have a story. Over 25 years ago I was travelling through Newark NYC when I spotted a lovely lady called Irene with long red natural nails, and we spoke.... She mentioned that over the years she had been growing her nails and sold them for famous stars to use, she did mention names and I seem to remember that Dolly was one of them. Returning to Dolly, I could never understand how she played guitar with those nails, I play fingerstyle guitar and usually keep a few mms of growth on my right hand but the left hand has to be short in order to make the chords cleanly. Well, Dolly found a way around this by alternative string tuning that would be suitable for the key of the song she would play and she would just put a finger, flat across the board to attain the chord. It's called open tuning.

I always liked Dolly. I found her nails too false to be attractive but she played a part in making longer nails more acceptable. 20 years ago any press about her would mention her long nails but recent coverage rarely mentions her nails at all.
